DETROIT – An aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit rescued 5 people from the rocks after their fishing vessel lost power and was blown against a breakwall by high winds, Friday.

The names of those rescued are not being released.

Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Detroit command center received a call at 2 p.m. from the Huron County Sheriff Department about a 25-foot fishing vessel with 5 people aboard, against the rocks of the Harbor Beach breakwall.

BOSTON — Northeast Coast Guard units and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office of Law Enforcement personnel are increasing focus this year on the enforcement of the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan (ALWTRP), to detect and deter illegally placed fishing gear and reduce the likelihood of fatal whale entanglements from occurring.

Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and in alignment with whale migration patterns, increased operations will run May 1 through June 30 and compromise of more frequent air and sea patrols in seasonal gear closure areas by NOAA law enforcement personnel and Coast Guard patrol boats, cutter crews, and air assets.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The Coast Guard repatriated 12 Dominican nationals Sunday to the Dominican Republic following the interdiction of a migrant vessel in Mona Passage waters off Puerto Rico.

“The quick response and coordination between the Coast Guard units involved resulted in the safe interdiction and removal of the migrants from a dangerous situation,” said Lt. Cmdr. Roberto Concepción, Coast Guard Sector San Juan command duty officer. “People should not take to the sea aboard unseaworthy vessels and trust ruthless smugglers with their well-being, it could cost them their lives.”

Trio Marketed Laser Devices to Elderly Consumers as Cure-All

Three defendants who marketed and sold light-emitting medical devices as a cure-all to consumers, primarily targeting the elderly, were sentenced on April 20, 2018 by a federal judge in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Robert “Larry” Lytle, 83, of Rapid City, who was the leader and organizer of the scheme, was sentenced to 12 years in prison, followed by 2 years of supervised release. Ronald D. Weir Jr., 39, of Sioux Falls was sentenced to 24 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release. Irina Kossovskaia, 63, a Canadian resident, was sentenced to 15 months in prison, followed by 2 years of supervised release. U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange will issue a final restitution order within 90 days.

The ringleader of an operation that lured people into an expensive negative-option scam using a low-cost “trial” offer for tooth whiteners and other products is banned from negative-option sales under a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission.
