Allow extra travel time as project to improve bridges begins in April

Beginning next month, drivers who use Interstate 40 should plan to be shifted onto temporary crossovers between the eastbound and westbound travel lanes at the Cottonwood Wash bridges from milepost 258.93 to 260.05, about 5 miles east of Winslow.

This detour is required for crews to begin a bridge-improvement project that includes removing and replacing the existing bridge decks and reconstructing the roadway bridge approaches. The project will be completed in two phases, beginning with work on eastbound I-40 in early April 2018. Construction will pause for the winter season and is scheduled to resume in spring 2019 on westbound I-40. Work is scheduled for completion by late 2019.

The speed limit in the construction zone will be reduced to 55 mph and drivers are advised to plan for slow traffic and allow extra travel time.

Schedules are subject to change based on weather and other unforeseen factors.
