I was driving into work a few days ago with the Charlie Daniels song, "In America" playing on the CD. As I listened to the lyrics, I couldn't help but reflect on our freedoms and the pride we as Americans have in this great country of ours.
As the Fourth of July, our Independence Day, draws near, Charlie said it well when he tells his listeners that "this Lady may have stumbled but she ain't never failed . . . and we're walkin' real proud and we're talkin' real loud again."
As we contemplate our freedom, elections approach and politicians will be clamoring for seats in Washington as well as here in Arizona. The war in Iraq is certain to become an issue in the battle for public offices across the country.
Many media outlets will look for sensationalism in their bid to sell more newspapers and increase viewership. The war in Iraq and against terrorism will be a convenient excuse for any woes felt here at home. In the shortsighted short term, man's inhumanity to man will be forgotten. Take care of our own, yes, but isn't taking care of each other, regardless of where we live on this planet what true freedom is really all about?
Summer officially starts today and there's no doubt we're feeling the heat. Temperatures this week are expected to hit 113 by the weekend. Outdoor enthusiasts should exercise care and remember to keep lots of water handy for replenishment.
Until next issue . . . take care.
