House Approves Transportation Bill with New Funds for Tonto Creek
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Rick Renzi (AZ -1) announced on July 29, 2005 that House of Representatives approved comprehensive transportation funding legislation, which contained almost $3 million for the Tonto Creek Bridge project. More than 900 people live on the east side of Tonto Creek. Three roads are available to cross Tonto Creek, but traveling to and from the area has been complicated by repeated closures. Currently, two of the roads are open, but traveling by car is still very difficult. The transportation bill now heads to the Senate where it is expected to pass, and then to President George W. Bush's desk for approval.
"This is great news for the Rim Country and Tonto Basin," said Congressman Renzi. "These funds will allow us to move forward with this project. This new bridge is vital to the community, and will provide a big boost in safety to families who will not have to worry about road closures or unsafe conditions, not to mention a quicker journey into town for school, work and groceries."
The Tonto Creek Bridge funds will be managed by the U.S. Corps of engineers. The Corps will manage the planning phase which will include public meetings on design and location, and will focus on engineering, mapping, surveys and structural analysis.
Gila County Supervisor Joe Sanchez said this was amazing news for the residents of Tonto Basin. "This is the best possible news for those living in Tonto Basin," said Sanchez. "This money has been a major priority for a number of years and we are thrilled to see more funds for this important project. The positive actions taken by Congressman Renzi are a huge step in the right direction for us. Combined with the earlier funds secured by the Congressman, we can reasonably hope for a Tonto Basin Bridge in the near future. We are so thankful for his help and assistance."
In related news, Renzi also announced that the House has approved comprehensive transportation funding legislation, which contained $3 million to widen US 60 to Gonzales Pass. Gonzales Pass is a challenging section of roadway that results in a high percentage of accidents due to the heavy traffic use. The transportation bill now heads to the Senate where it is expected to pass, and then to President George W. Bush's desk for approval.
"US 60 is the gateway to Eastern Arizona and this essential project will reduce the potential for accidents as more and more travelers use this vital transportation artery," said Congressman Renzi. "The widening of US 60 to Gonzales Pass will also help with the added congestion and traffic back-ups that occur on weekends."
