(State Capitol, Phoenix) Rep. Bob Robson wants creditors to verify the identity of a consumer if they do not use a consumer credit report before issuing a line of credit. Under HB2587, creditors would also have to verify the address of an applicant if it is substantially different than the one on file with the company before issuing a credit card. "Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the country," said Robson, R-Chandler and speaker pro tem. "Americans are forced to spend months or years clearing their names and reestablishing good credit. Many are not able to obtain loans for cars or houses because of a poor credit report." Identity theft occurs when someone uses another individual's personal information, such as a Social Security number or credit card number, for fraudulent purposes. "What is particularly alarming about this type of crime is that anyone - no matter their age, race, or socioeconomic status - can become a victim. While it is impossible to completely stop identity theft, this bill is a part of my continuing effort to minimize the likelihood that it will occur," said Robson.
