State Capitol, Phoenix Gov. Napolitano buckled under pressure from the pro-illegal lobby and vetoed a bill that would allow all police officers to enforce federal immigration law. Napolitanos veto snubs a unanimous House vote, a two-thirds vote in the Senate, and the will of a supermajority of Arizonans.
HB2807, proposed by Rep. John Nelson (R-Litchfield Park), was attempting to eliminate rules that bar police officers from checking the immigration status of people they arrest. Eliminating these sanctuary policies have been demanded by officers on the street but disregarded by city leaders.
This is a perfect example of Napolitanos hypocrisy on immigration. Nelson said. Police officers wanted this, they want to protect their community, and she sold them out. Its absolutely disgraceful.ÂÂÂ
There were safeguards for civil rights in the bill. Immigration status would be checked only if the person was arrested for another crime and officers would undergo training by Immigration and Customs enforcement.
Victims of crimes perpetrated by illegal immigrants who were caught and released need to know the Legislature stands with them. Nelson said.
