Declaration will Provide Financial Assistance for Local Recovery, Mitigation Efforts
PHOENIX Governor Jan Brewer has issued a Declaration of Emergency in response to monsoon-related flooding in the Gladiator Fire burn area in Yavapai County. The Gladiator Fire began in the Prescott National Forest on May 13, 2012, and burned tens of thousands of acres.
Following that fire, a series of monsoon storms hit the area July 13-14 and caused significant flooding and debris flow in the Lincoln Ridge and Peck Canyon watersheds. Portions of Crown King Road the only viable road to and from the town of Crown King were also damaged. Significant construction is necessary to repair the road and mitigate future flooding damage.
The Yavapai County Board of Supervisors has already declared a State of Emergency and requested the States financial assistance in order to repair Crown King Road and reimburse the county for its emergency-response expenses. Road repairs are expected to total nearly $85,000, according to preliminary damage assessment estimates.
A Declaration of Emergency can be issued to provide financial support for qualifying response and recovery costs. The Declaration directs the following actions:
a. Declares that a State of Emergency exists in Yavapai County due to flooding, effective July 13, 2012;
b. Directs that the sum of $100,000 from the State General Fund be made available to the Director of the Arizona Division of Emergency Management to be expended in accordance with A.R.S. §35-192, A.A.C. R8-2-301 to 321, and Executive Order 79-4; and
c. Directs that the State of Arizona Emergency Response and Recovery Plan be used to direct and control state and other assets and authorize the Director of the Arizona Division of Emergency Management to coordinate state assets.
