U.S. Department of Commerce Plan for Orderly Shutdown Due to Lapse of Congressional Appropriations
Funding for a portion of the federal government expired on September 30, 2025. The Department of Commerce is prepared for a lapse in funding that would necessitate a significant reduction in operations and is currently implementing its plan. The Democrat-led shutdown has halted several key functions of the Department of Commerce, including: Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA): Important economic reporting will be suspended, such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Gross Domestic Income (GDI), Personal Income and other key indicators used nationwide. U.S. Census Bureau: Pause of essential economic and disaster-related data. International Trade Administration (ITA) and Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS): Non-national security operations are halted. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA): Suspension of services including fisheries monitoring, stock assessment and survey work. The Department of Commerce has prioritized critical functions to remain fully operational including National Weather Service: Continuation of 24/7 operations nationwide, including all U.S. states and territories, to protect lives and property. National Security Functions critical to safeguarding the nation will remain operational. United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is fee funded and is expected to remain operational during the shutdown.
