Hunter Education Class

Florence Community Services Department has partnered with Arizona Game and Fish to offer a Hunter Education Class from Tuesday, August 14 to Saturday, August 18 in the Community Center at 778 N. Main Street. The first four days are classroom instruction from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday is range day from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. These classes are designed to promote safe, knowledgeable and responsible hunter conduct, as well as an understanding of wildlife management laws and regulations, and to encourage the safe handling of firearms. All classroom Hunter Education courses are taught by certified Arizona Game and Fish Department Volunteer Instructors. Sheriff J. Adam Shepherd would like to release the following information regarding an aggravated assault investigation.

On February 3, 2018, at approximately 6:22 p.m. the Gila County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from an individual reporting that an unknown male subject had entered her residence and a struggle over a handgun ensued. During the struggle, the victim sustained a single gunshot wound to her lower extremities.

The discovery of gold followed by California statehood in 1850, created a need for quicker mail to the growing western state. California’s population swelled to over 380,000 people making a new form of communication critical to the state’s economic health.

These reasons were the predominant factors which created the Pony Express in 1860. For 19 months, before the invention of the telegraph, 127 riders, averaging about 75 miles per day, delivered mail, messages and newspapers to all points between St. Joseph, Missouri and San Francisco.

PHOENIX – Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) officials announced today a $12,000 Brownfields Grant award to the Town of Pinetop-Lakeside to conduct an asbestos and lead-based paint survey of the old Town Hall building at the corner of Niels Hansen and Jackson Lanes.

The Town of Pinetop-Lakeside intends to conduct remediation and abatement of contaminants based on these survey results and to prepare for the building's safe demolition. The building previously served, over 60 years, as a Town Hall, an office space and a junior high school.

Sheriff J. Adam Shepherd would like to release the following information regarding an assault and subsequent burglary of an elderly woman on Hunt Ave in the Central heights area outside of Globe Arizona.

On July 22, 2017, at approximately 2:53 a.m., the Gila County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an assault and burglary in the area of Hunt Ave in Central Heights. The 82 year old victim was washing dishes at the time when she was assaulted inside her home by an unknown suspect. The suspect was reportedly a stocky male wearing a white ski mask with no other description available.

PHOENIX — The Tonto National Forest will offer a 30-day public comment period from July 1 through July 30, 2017, to collect feedback on suggested changes to the proposed management plan for the Apache Leap Special Management Area and forthcoming Forest Plan amendment that would incorporate the new management direction.

Guidance for providing comments is included in the June 30, 2017, Legal Notice. Guidance also is available on the project website at: http://www.apacheleapsma.us/.

According to Tonto National Forest project manager Mary Rasmussen, the Congressional designation of the Apache Leap Special Management Area in December 2014 created a changed circumstance signaling an initial need for a plan amendment. The management plan components that are under development for the Apache Leap Special Management Area has created an additional need to amend the Tonto Forest Plan.
