WASHINGTON, D.C. – At the direction of President Donald J. Trump, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue has announced a proposed rule intended to move more able-bodied recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to self-sufficiency through the dignity of work. The rule is meant to restore the system to what it was meant to be: assistance through difficult times, not lifelong dependency. Over time, without any changes in the underlying welfare reform legislation of 1996, that ideal has been watered down by out-of-control administrative flexibility in SNAP.

Defendants ordered to pay more than $4.6 million

At the Federal Trade Commission’s request, a U.S. district court in Illinois has handed down a final judgment and order requiring nine related Canadian and U.S. defendants to pay more than $4.6 million for tricking small businesses into paying for Internet directory listings, search engine optimization services, or website design and hosting services they never ordered.

The FTC announced the case against the Premium Business Pages defendants in June 2018, as part of the multi-agency “Operation Main Street” law enforcement initiative directed to scams targeting small businesses.

A Huntington Beach man pleaded guilty yesterday to filing a false tax return that failed to report millions of dollars in foreign bank accounts and the resulting income.

According to court documents, Elie Waknine, of Huntington Beach, California, held millions of dollars in an offshore account in Israel at Bank Leumi Le-Israel B.M. from approximately 1994 to 2011. Despite having this account, Waknine filed a tax return for 2007 that falsely claimed he did not have financial interest in or signature authority over any foreign financial accounts. In an effort to further hide his money, Waknine instructed Bank Leumi to hold bank mail from delivery to the United States, and obtained access to his offshore funds through the use of “back-to-back” loans,   more...
Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (USFS) has a new strategy for managing catastrophic wildfires and the impacts of invasive species, drought, and insect and disease epidemics.

Specifically, a new report titled Toward Shared Stewardship across Landscapes: An Outcome-based investment Strategy (PDF, 3.7 MB) outlines the USFS’s plans to work more closely with states to identify landscape-scale priorities for targeted treatments in areas with the highest payoffs.

MIAMI—Rear Adm. Peter Brown, commander of Coast Guard 7th District presented a monument commemorating the Coast Guard for their service in World War I and World War II at the V-J Day Remembrance ceremony at Boynton Beach, today.

The Boynton Beach Veterans V-J Day Remembrance ceremony is an event that celebrates the anniversary America’s victory over Imperial Japan following their surrender on Aug. 14, 1945. Today is the 73rd anniversary of the victory and the event honors and commemorates local WWII Veterans for their service.
