Readers have probably noticed the change in the overall appearance of this publication. According to the old adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." While we have no intention of changing the quality of news we bring to readers each and every edition, we feel we are long overdue for a cosmetic facelift, which is what we have been working on these many months.

Recent changes have been in preparation for the final presentation, which, if all goes according to plan, should be in place with the next issue, due to hit the streets on November 7.

In other local news, the Tonto Basin Ranger District is planning to conduct a prescribed burn in the Del Shay Basin, located approximately seven miles northeast of Punkin Center starting in late October. The burn is designed to reduce the potential for large, catastrophic wildfires by targeting decadent stands of brush throughout the 17,000 acre project area.

Re-introducing fire to fire dependent ecosystems also benefits wildlife and livestock by creating more palatable and diverse vegetation. The burn will be conducted in such a manner as to emulate natural fire patterns and create a mosaic of burned and unburned areas across the landscape. The goal is to treat approximately 3,500 acres per year over the next several years.

Fire officials expect that smoke will be visible during the day from Payson to Tonto Basin, but should clear off quickly after sunset.

If you have any questions about the Del Shay prescribed burn, please contact the Tonto Basin Ranger District at 928-467-3200.

Until next issue . . . take care.   back...
