It's been pretty hard to miss all the discussion concerning the economy and rising gas prices. At nearly $3.50 per gallon in some areas, the concern is understandable for those who will seek respite and relaxation during Arizona's upcoming summer weather.

In the midst of the economic downturn in housing (according to the latest figures, however, sales of single-family homes were up for January and February), and rising gas prices, there lies the small community of Roosevelt, an "oasis in the middle of the desert" and just a short two-hour drive from metropolitan Phoenix.

Historic lake levels are bringing visitors in from near and far - "fill it and they will come." Fishing, boating, water sport enthusiasts are discovering what locals have known all along - "Roosevelt Lake is (was) Arizona's best-kept secret.

Even the Arizona Republic, which often seems to thrive on negative sensationalism, is writing positive prose on Arizona's largest reservoir.

According to Leisure and Sport Review (LASR.net), "Roosevelt Lake is the place [for fisherman] to be with killer spring crappie spawns to lunker largemouth bass and record-setting flathead or channel catfish in the summer.

"This lake, with some of the best bass waters in the country, will only get better as water levels increase, flooding new structures and bringing new nutrients to enrich the lake and its aquatic community. "If you don't catch fish at Roosevelt, you're not trying hard enough," says professional tournament angler Greg Hines of Mesa."

If the economy has you down, and you're in need of a much-needed break without spending a small fortune, head out to Roosevelt. While you're there, stop in at Boston's Lake House Grill (see ad this issue) for an incredibly tasty, mouth-watering burger and the best wings anywhere! See you there.   back...
