The primaries were held yesterday, September 2 and I hope each and every registered voter found time out of their busy schedule to cast a ballot for candidates. Although we still have the general election in November, many of the races were decided yesterday. As of press time, we did not have the final tallies and will carry that information in the next issue.

As most of you know, both presidential candidates have selected running mates. Senator Obama has chosen Joe Biden, while Senator McCain, in a surprising announcement last Friday, selected Sarah Palin, Alaska's governor.

Despite my past misgivings about the selection of a female as president, I must say I was duly impressed with Sarah Louise Heath Palin. The 44 year-old was born on February 11, 1964 and married Todd Palin, her high school sweetheart, a union member and oil production operator on Alaskas north slope. They have five children, including a son in the Army. Sarah Palin is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, loves to fish and hunt, has run a marathon (she will need the stamina for this race), and supports drilling in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge, which Senator McCain opposes. She is the first woman ever nominated for vice president as a Republican.

This should prove to be an interesting race and political pundits across the country are, of course, already making predictions. Im looking forward to watching the debates between these candidates.

Over the next several issues, we will cover more on both state and presidential candidates for readers, as well as local propositions that have made this elections ballot.

On Thursday evening, August 28, the Valley was hit with monsoon storms of intense proportions. I turned to Channel 15 (my personal news channel of choice) at 10:00 p.m. and discovered they, along with Channel 12, were both having technical difficulities due to the storms.

Although we were unable to get more information out to readers in time for this issue, we have covered the Grand Canyon flood, as well as several of Arizona floods of historical significance. We hope you will find the information both interesting and useful. Labor Day weekend, was as usual, quite busy around the Roosevelt Lake area. Many kids are back in school and this weekend signals a last hurrah as summer fades into cooler temperatures.

Speaking of the Roosevelt Lake area, and as indicated by one of our feature articles, Jakes Corner, the movie hits theaters in the Valley this coming Friday. It is an incredibly heart-warming family picture that was filmed entirely in Arizona. Director Jeff Santo, along with producer Hollywood Heard, singer-songwriter BJ Thomas, co-producer Dan Marjele, actor Richard Tyson, Colton Rogers, and many other notable castmembers and crew, will be on hand this evening at the premiere, which takes place at Jakes Corner. We promise loads of updates in the next issue.

As the end of summer approaches, candidates and people across the country remain hopeful to brighter days ahead. Until next issue . . . take care.   back...
