Issues and Concerns
From the desk of Congressman John Moolenaar
Last week, I was in Mecosta County to visit with the Big Rapids Fire Department and meet with local officials and firefighters following my successful effort to secure federal funding for a new pumper-tanker fire truck. Last year, my request for $377,161 was included in the Appropriations process to help the department cover cost of replacing its aging truck. This investment will provide firefighters with the modern equipment they need to respond more effectively to emergencies and better protect families throughout the Big Rapids community. I appreciate the opportunity to meet with local leaders and thank them for their continued commitment to keeping residents safe.
Surveying Flood-Damaged Communities
I also went to Manistee County to meet with local leaders and see firsthand the damage caused by April's severe flooding. It was encouraging to hear about the community's resilience as recovery efforts continue. I appreciate President Trump approving the federal disaster declaration so FEMA can work alongside state and local officials to help rebuild damaged infrastructure and support the communities impacted by these storms.
Following the President’s disaster declaration, homeowners and renters in Barry, Gratiot, Manistee, Mecosta, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Osceola, and Wexford counties can now apply for FEMA assistance to help recover from storm-related damage. Impacted families can apply at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362. If you were affected by the flooding, I strongly encourage you to apply before the August 31 deadline.
Meeting with Michigan Farmers
I had the opportunity to meet with apple growers from Michigan’s Second District at the Roossinck Fruit Storage and Orchard facility in Fremont. I appreciate Eric and Liz Roossinck, Evan Roossinck, and local farmers from across the region for taking the time to share their perspectives on the challenges facing Michigan’s agriculture industry.
During our conversation, we discussed important issues impacting apple growers, including international trade, tariffs, and agricultural labor. Michigan farmers rely on access to reliable markets and a strong workforce, and I will continue working in Congress to ensure they have the tools and support needed to succeed.
Specialty crops like apples play an important role in Michigan’s economy, and I remain committed to advocating for policies that strengthen our farmers, expand market opportunities, and support the future of agriculture in our state.
As always, thank you for the opportunity to represent you in Congress. I will continue fighting for policies that strengthen our communities, support Michigan families, and put America first.
