With the primaries just a few short weeks away, the bantering among local candidates is starting to heat up. As expected, there are those who are sticking to the issues and keeping their campaign positive, and there are those who are using whatever means they feel is necessary just to get the win.

Rather than stoop to the level of those touting negativity in an effort to smear their opponents, Id like to take this opportunity to endorse two candidates who are focused on the issues and running positive campaigns.

David Cook, a Republican is running for Supervisor in District 3. A family man and local cattle rancher, David is attuned to the needs of Gila County residents. His focus remains on the issues at hand and on long-term positive growth for Gila County.

Also sticking to the issues and running a positive campaign, is Darrell Stubbs, a Democrat, challenging the incumbent for sheriff. As a retired deputy, Darrell is looking to take a more proactive approach in serving the needs of Gila County citizens. He has been endorsed by the Arizona State Fraternal Order of Police who believe he is the right man for the job.

I hope you will take the opportunity to get out and meet both of these candidates face-to-face and see why the Arizona Free Press is endorsing both David Cook and Darrell Stubbs. The primaries take place on September 2 and this is a very important election day for voters across the county. Wont you join me in voting both of these individuals into office?

If you havent been watching the Olympics, youre missing out on history in the making. Michael Phelps, who is going for Olympic Gold in eight events, just won his seventh gold medal on Friday night to tie former record-holder Mark Spitz. The Friday night event had us all holding our breath as we watched in anticipation. The race was so close that initially it was hard to tell who placed first and who took the silver. When all was said and done, Phelps had his seventh gold, won by one-hundreth of a second.

Speaking of gold medal events, the American Legion and hundreds of war Veterans are making a fund-raising ride across America with a goal of raising over $350,000 for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund for children of military personnel who died on and after Sept. 11, 2001.
