October is here signaling the end of triple digit temperatures. Although highs this past week have hit over 100, the summer heat is beginning to ebb away into a memory as cooler temperatures bring anticipation of outdoor conversations, barbecues and sweater weather.

Football season is underway and after last weeks loss, sports fans are left wondering if were back to the same old Cardinals, despite their 2-0 start.

October also marks the beginning of the playoffs as baseball teams vie for a spot in the World Series. The Boston Red Sox (a favorite team of mine) will defend last years title with a wild card spot as they take on Artie Morenos Angels.

As usual, theres been no shortage of headline news this past week. While watching one of the Fox news channels on Sunday morning, I wondered if perhaps I had fallen back asleep and was dreaming when a special news alert bulletin came on informing viewers that this wasnt a movie we were watching when the broadcast announced that a Ukrainian cargo ship carrying tanks and heavy weapons had been taken over by ˜pirates along the Somalian coast. According to reports, one crew member died from hypertension. The ransom demand was $20 million.

There is growing concern over what many perceive as Al-Qaedas growing strength with the increasing violence in Pakistan, and the recent bombing of the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad.

As of press time, Congress was still debating the $700 billion bailout plan, which would allow the government to buy defaulted mortgages, many of which are held by Wall Street banks. A vote on the 110-page bill was expected no later than Wednesday, October 1. The Feds also announced an initiative to support financial stability.

Wachovia has been acquired by Citigroup and despite rumors, officials are adamant that this was not a bailout. Yet, Wachovia shareholders and pension plan owners have seen their stock plummet amid the buyout.

The McCain and Obama debate took place on Friday night and the debate between VPs Governor Palin and Senator Biden is scheduled for Thursday night.

Chocolate lovers may want to keep in mind that Cadbury has recalled its Chinese-made chocolate as a precaution. We have an update in this issue on the melamine contamination, which can be found on page 17 of this edition.
