The end of 2008 is fast approaching, and with the economy on peoples minds, many are left wondering if 2009 will bring with it a renewed sense of hope along a path that turns in a more positive direction.

A new president takes office on January 20 and time will tell what change he has in store for the American people.

Personally, Barack Obama did not impress me, and I am, as many of you know, disappointed in his election to the highest office in our country. Records show Barack Obama with $133.6 million during a 15-day reporting period during the primary election. According to Federal Election Commission records, the report for the primary, shows cash on hand at the beginning of the reporting period on October 1, 2008, at $133,649,682.99 (one hundred and thirty-three million plus) and after expenditures, was $65,762,929.01 on October 15, 2008. Although all of the final reports are not yet in, Obama is alleged to have spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $650 million on this campaign. You can buy a lot of campaign advertising with that kind of a war chest.

We will keep you apprised of this information as it becomes available. I would like to add that everything we print with regard to Mr. Obama is a matter of public record. If you don't like what you read here, we suggest you take the time to do your own homework. It is our strong belief that the American people have a right to know all that they can about the person elected to lead this country for the next four years. Of course, the proof is in the pudding as they say. Time will tell whether or not Barack Obama has what it will take to put this country on track again or whether he's just another tax and spend democrat.

The holiday season starts next week with Thanksgiving, a time for giving thanks for all that we hold most dear, family, friends, freedom. Let us all remember to take time to reflect on what life might be like without the freedom to hold elections, to worship where we choose, to travel across state lines without restrictions, to bear arms, and so much more that we take for granted all to often.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, this issues Food Guide, which can be found on page 18, features several scrumptious recipes to add to the turkey day table. If you have recipes or cooking tips you would like to share with readers, please feel free to send them along. We will credit you with your recipe when it is published in the Food Guide.

As you peruse through this edition, readers will find several local articles by Globe resident Pearl Nancarrow. Its been an absolute pleasure to publish all the local happenings written by this former school teacher, who by the way, recently received accolades from AARP. We look forward to coming editions of the latest doins around town.

And -- on the subject of doins, parents across Gila County may find their little ghost, goblin or ghoul among the pictures taken on Halloween in downtown Globe thanks to the photography of talented Roosevelt resident Mickey Livingston. Mickey says she had so much fun while out snapping photos of all the little ones. We hope to feature more of Mickeys work in the future.

As another year draws to a close, we hope the coming one keeps you safe and happy. We wish you success and prosperity in these tough times. Until the next issue . . . take care.   back...
