Eruption of lava in the Leilani Estates subdivision in the lower East Rift Zone of Kīlauea Volcano continues. Several additional eruptive fissures or vents - each several hundred yards long - have opened over the past day. No significant lava flows have yet formed. Spatter and lava are accumulating primarily within a few tens of yards of the vent.

The sixth and most recent fissure is on the eastern edge of the subdivision. Not all fissure vents remain active and no far-traveled lava flows have formed.

Incident: East Rift Zone Eruption in Leilani Subdivision

This is a Civil Defense update for Friday May 4, 2018 at 3:30 PM.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory confirms the volcanic eruption continues in Leilani Subdivision in the Puna District.

Active volcanic vents are located on Makamae, Kaupili and Mohala Streets. A new vent has opened near the intersection of Leilani Avenue and Kahukai Road. There is no activity at Puna Geothermal Venture at this time. PGV is secured.

TUCSON, AZ – Customs and Border Protection officers at Arizona’s Port of Nogales arrested a 14 year-old yesterday as he attempted to smuggle more than two pounds of methamphetamine.

Officers working at the Morley Gate Crossing Thursday afternoon referred the 14-year-old U.S. citizen for a secondary inspection. During the inspection, a canine’s alert led to the discovery of more than two pounds of methamphetamine, worth in excess of $3,000.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is offering two opportunities for early participation in the new, more efficient claims decision review process outlined in the historic Veterans Appeals Improvement and Modernization Act of 2017, which can be found at https://benefits.va.gov/benefits/appeals.asp.

These two opportunities will allow eligible Veterans to receive a review of a decision on a claim much faster than the current appeals process.

Five physicians of Redirections Treatment Advocates, LLC, an opioid addiction treatment practice with offices in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, have been indicted on charges of unlawfully dispensing controlled substances and health care fraud. These indictments represent the latest in a series of charges filed since Attorney General Sessions announced the formation of the Opioid Fraud and Abuse Detection Unit, a Department of Justice initiative that uses data to target and prosecute individuals that commit opioid-related health care fraud.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has added prosecutors to handle the prosecutions of improper entry, illegal reentry, and alien smuggling cases, and additional immigration judges to handle the adjudication of immigration court cases that result from the crisis at the Southwest border.

Thirty-five new Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) positions have been allocated to U.S. Attorney’s Offices along the Southwest border. The breakdown of those positions is as follows:
