As the song goes, "the heat is on." Temperatures are expected to reach near record highs this week and all of us are anxiously awaiting fall (not that we're trying to rush time) and cooler temperatures.

On the upside, gas prices are slowly dropping (again) and Roosevelt has become a nearby destination for folks looking for some respite from the soaring temperatures.

As we celebrate another Independence Day, we thought it appropriate to include a couple of letters from military personnel to S.O.S. thanking them for the care packages sent from home.

S.O.S., a non-profit organization, along with many others, are worth while causes supporting our troops abroad.

In addition to the letters, this issue includes articles from our military detailing stories of heroism, and the aircraft flown by those defending this country and our freedom. Let us all take some time over this long holiday to reflect why we celebrate our Independence each year and what life here would be like without the freedoms many of us often take for granted.

Readers should notice the addition of a new gardening column in this edition. Catherine, the herb lady, offers some great tips and uses for various herbs. Check it out on page 5!

Speaking of interesting information, I wanted readers to know of a dental university in Mesa that charges about half that of Maricopa County dentists. As an example, a Globe dentist quoted me $299.00 for an extraction, while another quoted between $75.00 and $150.00. The school's price is $63.00. I highly recommend them and their state-of-the-art facility. Their phone number is 480-248-8100.

Until next issue - stay cool and take care.   back...
