A Huntington Beach man pleaded guilty yesterday to filing a false tax return that failed to report millions of dollars in foreign bank accounts and the resulting income.

According to court documents, Elie Waknine, of Huntington Beach, California, held millions of dollars in an offshore account in Israel at Bank Leumi Le-Israel B.M. from approximately 1994 to 2011. Despite having this account, Waknine filed a tax return for 2007 that falsely claimed he did not have financial interest in or signature authority over any foreign financial accounts. Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (USFS) has a new strategy for managing catastrophic wildfires and the impacts of invasive species, drought, and insect and disease epidemics.

Specifically, a new report titled Toward Shared Stewardship across Landscapes: An Outcome-based investment Strategy (PDF, 3.7 MB) outlines the USFS’s plans to work more closely with states to identify landscape-scale priorities for targeted treatments in areas with the highest payoffs.

MIAMI—Rear Adm. Peter Brown, commander of Coast Guard 7th District presented a monument commemorating the Coast Guard for their service in World War I and World War II at the V-J Day Remembrance ceremony at Boynton Beach, today.

The Boynton Beach Veterans V-J Day Remembrance ceremony is an event that celebrates the anniversary America’s victory over Imperial Japan following their surrender on Aug. 14, 1945. Today is the 73rd anniversary of the victory and the event honors and commemorates local WWII Veterans for their service.

New Partnerships Support More Prosperous Futures for More than 73,000 People

POLAND, La. – Assistant to the Secretary for Rural Development Anne Hazlett visited Louisiana today to announce that USDA is investing more than $124 million (PDF, 155.4 KB) to help rebuild and improve rural water infrastructure in 23 states. Five projects in Louisiana are receiving funding.

“Modern, reliable water infrastructure provides a foundation for economic growth and prosperity,” Hazlett said. “USDA’s partnerships with rural communities underscore Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue’s commitment to ensuring that rural places have the infrastructure needed to thrive.”

USDA is providing the funding through the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant program. It can be used to finance drinking water, stormwater drainage and waste disposal systems for rural communities with 10,000 or fewer residents.

Joseph Mahmoud Dibee, 50, of Seattle, Washington, an accused domestic terrorist and 12-year fugitive, has been apprehended and returned to the United States to face federal criminal charges in Oregon, California and Washington State.

“Whatever the motivation, terrorism is simply unacceptable,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers. “Domestic terrorism is no exception. Because of the close cooperation between our international and intergovernmental partners, Dibee will now face the consequences for his crimes. This should send a clear message to all other criminals on the run: no matter how long it takes, we will find you and we will bring you to justice.”

Projects Will Provide Improved Electric Reliability

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $345.5 million in 20 infrastructure projects to improve rural electric service in 14 states.

“Delivering reliable and affordable electricity to power rural America will help lay the groundwork for increased rural prosperity and economic opportunity,” Secretary Perdue said. “USDA is partnering with rural electric utilities and cooperatives so they can continue to invest in infrastructure improvements to provide electric power to those who live and work in rural areas.”
