CLEVELAND — Proper preparation is vital for people recreating on or near frozen lakes and waterways as ice coverage across the Great Lakes makes a resurgence this week with sustained colder temperatures.

Coast Guard units, working with first responders, have performed more than 40 ice rescue cases since December 2017. Many of the rescues were successful because the survivors were properly prepared prior to going out on the ice.

New NIST publication aims to help contractors comply with DOD’s controlled info regulations.

It’s crunch time for government contractors. They only have until Dec. 31, 2017, to demonstrate they are providing appropriate cybersecurity for a class of sensitive data called Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) (link is external). Otherwise, they risk losing their contracts. For organizations that may be struggling to meet the deadline, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has a new publication intended to help.

Cottonwood, ID - Excavation work at Oregon State University’s (OSU) archaeology field school is once again underway for the season at Cooper’s Ferry in the Lower Salmon River Canyon. The field school is an ongoing cooperative effort between OSU and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Over the years, the BLM-managed site has hosted college students from across the U.S. who spend a portion of their summer conducting research on early human occupation of the river canyon.

The excavation site at Cooper’s Ferry offers a great opportunity to connect kids and adults to America’s natural and cultural heritage. During July, the public is invited to tour the site and learn more about the effort. Tours are available at no cost weekly Wednesday through Sunday, from 7:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Del Rio Sector Will Host a Veterans Only Open House on June 17

DEL RIO, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol in Del Rio will be hosting an open house event on June 17 for any veterans who are interested in applying to become an agent.

Within fiscal year 2016, the Border Patrol employed 19,828 men and women across the nation. Of that number, 1,439 were employed within the Del Rio Sector which has stations in Eagle Pass, Carrizo Springs, Comstock, Del Rio, Brackettville, Uvalde, Rocksprings, and San Angelo. And, Border Patrol is looking to hire more.

Part of the agency’s ongoing effort to coordinate with and educate the military community. Topics include: auto financing, student lending, information security, and avoiding scams.

The Federal Trade Commission will host a workshop in San Antonio, Texas, on July 19, 2017, to examine financial issues and scams that can affect military consumers, including active duty service members in all branches and veterans. The workshop also will discuss FTC resources available to military consumer advocates and representatives on financial readiness and fraud prevention, including the FTC’s Military Consumer Toolkit, available at The toolkit allows personal financial managers, counselors, and others in the military community to share practical financial readiness tips and can be individually customized and easily shared on social media.

LANGLEY, VA – The largest collection of declassified CIA records is now accessible online. The documents were previously only available to the public at the National Archives in Maryland. Approximately 930,000 documents, totaling more than 12 million pages, are now available in the CIA’s Electronic Reading Room on CIA's website.

Since 1999, the CIA has regularly released its historical declassified records to the standalone CIA Records Search Tool (CREST) system that was only accessible in person at the National Archives Records Administration (NARA) in College Park, Maryland. Moving these documents online highlights the CIA’s commitment to increasing the accessibility of declassified records to the public.
